The DSLR camera
Even the coolest snapper is just a camera if it doesn’t have these
There are cameras, and there are cameras. It’s kind of travesty that the little thing in your phone is pretending to be the same thing in essence as a DSLR. It hurts the DSLR pride, you know? Still, the perfect picture can rarely give all its credit to the camera, even if it's the coolest, newest,
fanciest DSLR. The camera is not a one-man band. It’s the savvy front-man of a band who walks away with all the applause, but really couldn’t do the show without his less-visible partners.
Zoom lens
For all the stunning pictures it can take, you can’t deny that a DSLR is just not discreet. Inconveniently, most of the really magical photo-ops are camera-shy: for anything from candid people-pictures to forest fauna, you’ll be grateful for a decent-sized zoom lens. Remember that bigger isn’t always better – the longer your zoom, the steadier your hand’s got to be. You know those huge, complicated tripods people use under serious zoom lenses at sports matches? We can’t all afford those. Or the lenses. For more regular purposes, Canon has a 28-135mm, Nikon has an 18-105mm, and they’ll only blow a mid-sized hole in your wallet.
Prime lens
A prime lens is one with a fixed focal length – that is, it doesn’t zoom. Life would be simple if that awesome zoom lens you just saw up there could be the only lens you had to own, but it really is not. The startling clarity of pictures taken with a prime lens has to be seen to be believed. If you’re a fan of shallow depth of field, prime lenses are your saviour. At a maximum aperture of 1.8 f-stops, you have Nikon’s 35mm and Canon’s 50mm.
Tripod
With a lesser camera, you probably wouldn’t mind balancing it on a pile of books, the top of a TV or practically any surface while you click. But you really don’t want to risk your DSLR like that – many a penta-prism’s tombstone has read “Balanced on inadequate surface”. Consider a real tripod instead. Since you can use it on any camera, this is a purchase you cannot regret.
Remote
Here’s a surprisingly unheard-of but vital accessory. When you’re shooting at a very high zoom level, with your camera on a tripod, you probably think the tripod is going to do all that’s needed for steadiness. But at really high zoom levels, even the millimetre that you nudge your camera when you depress the button could make metres of difference. Besides, for taking a picture like star trails (where you leave your camera shutter open so long that it records beautiful arcs of the “movement” of the stars in the night sky) you actually need a remote because most DSLRs aren’t designed to have the shutter open for above 30 seconds. You can choose between a wired remote (more reliable) or infrared wireless (convenient, but very close-range).
Tarun Tahiliani turns to menswear
An exclusive backstage interview with the designer on putting India back in Indian and on creating his first menswear line for Men’s Week.
Why menswear?
I realized it was the simplest thing for me to do as a man. With womenswear I have all these rules and pretences and I need to glamorize here and deglamorise there, but for menswear, I only have one rule – would I wear it?
Your womenswear is usually very colourful, but your men’s line is muted, do you think men are afraid of colour?
It was my first line so I did decide to play it safe. I think colour looks great on the Indian skin, but if you peek into my wardrobe, you will mostly only find black and gold – mostly because it makes me look slimmer. I guess a man would be attracted to a classy black kurta over a lemon yellow one, maybe it’s how we are conditioned. But my shoes? Now those are wild, I even have a fluorescent orange pair. I guess I never felt my feet were fat (laughs).
I know it’s a cliché, but every designer has to have an inspiration. What’s yours?
Every year people ask me and I sometimes say orientalism, sometimes I make up something else but essentially it’s always the same – Indian grandeur. Right now with designers it’s either western or Indian. There are very few people other than maybe Wendell (Rodericks) that create something in between. We are still learning how to do contemporary wear with Indian fabrics - ‘Indianesque ‘ as they call it.
Do you think a man in a Kurta Pyjama can be sexy?
Supremely so. Indianess is coming back in a way that is visceral. It’s very sexy. The confidence of not being so colonized is what is needed and what is coming. A suit is great but Indian wear, when fitted right can be so hot. Times are changing - I grew up in Colaba and we looked down on Hindi and went to Jesuit schools and visited clubs where we spoke in affected accents “Behram mereko paani laana.” (laughs.) Now you’d think it all sounds so demented. What we need is for India to have its own fashion identity and the answer lies in our roots, in our fabrics, in our culture. The British, French even the Americans have their own identity, because they don’t give up on their traditions, they just modernize them.
What do you think is the future of Indian couture?
Honestly Indian designers are atleast 60 years behind Western ones. Now Indian designers have started cutting right – we’ve learnt tailoring. The problem with traditional wear is that it was defined in an era when fitness was never important. In fact I wish I had been born 100 years earlier when being portly was the way to be – I wouldn’t have had to be on a diet all the time. Churidars, sarees etc are not made according to size. One piece fits everybody. Customisation is just coming in.
So are you all for going back to the tailor?
I’m all for going back to the designer. There is so much inappropriate fashion doing the rounds.
Like what?
Big logos, it’s for people who don’t understand fashion. If you notice, all the biggest brands only have logos in their cheaper more aspirational lines, not the high fashion pieces. But then, different strokes for different folks.
dirty springwash mint gel
Like a dip in a mountain spring
After a dirty night on the tiles, jolt yourself back to reality with our tingly spearmint shower gel. Springwash is like a dip in a mountain spring, just in time for the weather getting warmer; spearmint and menthol crystals will make your skin feel cool in a hot shower and give it a sweeter scent than peppermint. Your bits will feel fresher in no time.
Hard water?
Mo invented this refreshing and tingly shower gel, adding sodium bicarbonate to soften the water and deodorize the skin, making it absolutely perfect for 'Dirty' guys. There's also glycerine and sea salt in the recipe to soften the skin and hair as you're washing with it.
Lamborghini's new Aventador
Tired of your Ferrari? Looking to upgrade to the world’s most sought after super car?
After much anticipation Lamborghini’s latest supercar has arrived in India. Making its first world debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year it was only a matter of time until the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 made its way to the nation’s capital. Priced at Rs.3.69 crores, the Aventador LP 700-4,Lamborghini redefines the pinnacle of the world super sports car segment with brutal power, outstanding lightweight engineering and phenomenal handling precision.
So what makes this Lambo so special? Well, it's has been engineered from carbon-fiber that combines lightweight engineering with the highest levels of stiffness and safety. With its impeccable aerodynamic construction and lighter build the Aventador LP 700-4 makes for the ultimate high revving machine going 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).
Technically it's a masterpiece, and it's all Italian in style and form. But if its speed, razor-sharp lines and aerodynamic construction still don't do it for you, think about this - despite its 8% increase in power, this bad ass supercar has managed to decrease its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by nearly 20 percent. Are you sold yet?
Finally, a luxury smartphone
We’re no strangers to the unfathomably intricate craftsmanship and detailing ofluxury watches, and if you’ve been reading our print or digital pages, you’re certainly not either.
The watch market demonstrates more convincingly than almost any other product that we as men, love to flaunt. The problem is we don’t get too many opportunities that cater to both our ego and our desire for cutting edge technology.
Let’s face it, even the slickest PC, Mac or laptop is still, well, plastic and glass – and that’s a particular problem when it comes to mobile phones. You’re always pulling your phone out of your pocket in social situations and business meetings where brandishing a sophisticated device might give you a leg up. And what do you have? Plastic and glass. If you’re busy and social, you can add scratched and fingerprinted to that, too.
If Steve Jobs’ Cupertino geniuses had their way, that wouldn’t change, either – since Apple has long opposed the creation of luxury versions of its phones.
Finally, though, there is an alternative to San Francisco Bay Area minimalism, in the shape of TAG Heuer’s Link phones, constructed with the same detail and lavish styling as you’d expect from a Swiss watchmaker and housed in stainless steel, gold and a choice of coverings that includes alligator and snakeskin leather.
We know what you’re thinking: there have been a fair few pretenders in this market before, and they’ve usually come crashing down thanks to some pretty clunky software. Nothing to make you ditch your iPhone, that’s for sure. This time around TAG has called in everyone’s favourite challenger, Android. That means slick, constantly evolving software that ensures your slick, constantly evolving self isn’t left hanging.
It certainly won’t please everyone – or suit those who have a tendency to drop or lose their phone frequently – but it may just get the rest of the phone market thinking about the fact that we’re willing to spend an outsized amount on devices for our wrists that are, technologically outdated. Imagine how much we’d be willing to indulge the proverbial life support machines we carry in our pockets. Mobile phone design is ready to go up a few gears.
Nokia launches Lumia phones
Nokia bets on Windows
Unlike their smartphone rivals, Nokia has had a relatively quiet couple of months - until late last week, at least. Earlier in the year Nokia announced that it would support Windows Mobile wholeheartedly and now we’re finally seeing some results, in the shape of the Lumia series. The Nokia Lumia 800 is the flagship device, features a 3.7-inch AMOLED curved display and is powered by a 1.4 GHz processor. Like many high-end Nokia devices, it boasts an 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics. The phone will first hit the UK this month followed by a global release later in the year.

Colt – the new BlackBerry superphone
Has RIM got one (last?) trick up their sleeve?
With all the updates and new devices iPhone and Android users are getting,BlackBerry users aren’t in the best of spirits. The biggest news they got was that RIM was handing out free apps to apologise for the recent BB-service outage. Fret not, though, BBM-addicts, we’ve got some promising news for you.
RIM’s first phone to feature the BBX OS - derived from the best of BlackBerry OS and QNX, according to RIM - might be released later this year. Initial mock-ups of the BlackBerry Colt reveal the phone will be almost free of hardware buttons, other than the camera button, volume keys, and a power/lock button and possibly a mute button. The BBX OS is reportedly being tested on a 1.2 GHz single-core processor, but will likely make it to market with a dual-core processor – similar to a process used for RIM’s PlayBook tablet.
Dubbed RIM’s superphone (and they probably will need to coin a new term if they want to find a fresh niche for themselves) it will also likely feature a 4.3-inch screen, front and rear cameras, and those wonderful UI (user interface) elements from the Astonishing Tribe (TAT). For those not in the know, TAT was behind the lovely UI in the PlayBook.

Pass the Patrón
The salt, shot, lemon routine just went up a notch. Instead of just feeling the burn (and the subsequent fuzz), it's time to start tasting the drink. The legendary Patrón Tequila has arrived in India (its 120th country worldwide) and if you're not a fan of the spirit's heavy reputation, this light Tequilamight change your mind.
Patrón is now be available across India under a new partnership between Patrón Spirits International and Mumbai-based Aspri Spirits. In its Indian home town - so to speak - the chosen venue to launch it is Aer Bar, the rooftop bar that usually finds its crowd looking as premium as its drinks.
The spirit itself is very fine, the sawdusty funk you expect from the 100% agave tequilas has mellowed with its marriage in oak and the Bordeaux treatment adds some sweetness, vanilla and dried fruits to the mix. It is very moorish and extremely palatable.
The two Patrón spirits that have been released are the Silver Patron, known for its 100% Blue agave Tequila, and Patron’s signature coffee liquor, Patrón XO Café, which perfectly blends the kick to your consciousness with a boost for your spirits. After one of these, you may not need the lemon after all.
Silver Patrón: Rs. 5215/- 375 ml
Patrón XO Café: Rs. 5400/- 750 ml

Human Time Project Watches
We’re all for new gear, clothing and Facebook status updates, but every once in a while it’s also nice to give back. Using the same model as one laptop per child and Toms eyewear, the Human Time Project will give one watch to a health worker that needs one for every one purchased. The current watch, the HTP 1, is a PVD coated, 46mm case that appears to share design DNA with a TSOVET, powered by a quartz movement on one of four different military straps. At $400, supporting this cause by buying a watch would be a good idea. At $95, it’s practically a steal. $95
